I don’t do holiday stockings for my pets every year. But, sometimes when I find cute stuff that I just can’t resist buying I’ve been known to do a gift bag or some kind of pet stocking for our cats and dogs. And, apparently I’m not alone. According to a 2015 study, 95% of pet owners purchase holiday gifts for their animals.

I didn’t realize it was such a huge thing. But, I shouldn’t be surprised, I suppose. I mean, I buy things for my pets all the time — no holiday necessary.

Here are some great ideas for stocking stuffers or gifts to wrap for your four-legged fur babies, big or small.

And, while I’m at it, if you think the Christmas stocking featured here is cool you can make one of your very own. I made this Christmas stocking (along with a few others) for my kids several years ago with a free Red Heart crochet pattern. It was a lot of fun. Click here to read about that and maybe make your own!

Pet Toys

Some item choices to fill your pet’s holiday stocking:

bags of dog or cat treats

chew bones

catnip toys

feather-tipped keep away toys

hand-held lasers for animals to chase around

stuffed and/or squeaky toys

tennis balls

A new collar

Barnum's Animal Crackers

My dogs like animal crackers. I know, it’s not a pet-specific snack. But, I don’t think my dogs care or even realize that they aren’t human. So, on rare occasions I will pick up a small box of these delightful little cookies to treat them.

Charles with pig toy

Any of the options listed above are easy items to pick up so that your pet has a gift on Christmas morning right along with everyone else.

Cat Tree

New pet beds, small comfy blankets, and cat trees are other easy (though more expensive) choices because you know they will be used and thoroughly enjoyed.

But, if you’re looking for some unique (and useful) items, here are a few new ones I’ve come across in the last couple of years:

Grandma Lucy’s Oven-Baked Dog Treats (dogs and cats)

Grandma Lucy's Oven-Baked Dog Treats

This one is a no-brainer. It’s a delicious snack, so your pups will be super excited when you reveal it to them. But, they are also healthy for your pets.

Grandma Lucy’s Oven-Baked Dog Treats are 100% USDA Certified Organic, Certified Kosher, all natural, GMO-free and contain no preservatives. You’ll find several options to treat your cat to a tasty morsel, as well.

Grandma Lucy's Oven-Baked Dog Treats

These delicious treats are made with human-quality ingredients because our pets are part of our family and Grandma Lucy’s understands that they deserve the best, just like our families do.

In addition to treats, you can find pet food, supplements and also Nutriscan (a nifty way to identify ingredients that your pet is allergic or intolerant to). I had no idea! Good to know, though, for future reference if any of my animals starts having issues that our vet can’t put a finger on. You can never have too many tools in your pet care arsenal.

I love that Grandma Lucy’s treats are a healthy way to include my dogs in the holiday celebrations. And check out these flavors. They sound delicious! I kinda wish I was brave enough to try one for myself to see how they taste. But, more importantly, my dogs are very happy when the bag starts crinkling in my hands, because they know they’re about to get something very yummy in their tummy.

Zoo Snoods (dogs and cats)

Zoo Snoods Pet Hoods

I have had a great time dressing up my dogs and cats with Zoo Snoods. They are hand-knitted hoods that not only will keep your pet’s ears warm in chilly weather (and protect their ears from mud and moisture), but they are also available in a wide range of styles.

There are three sizes to fit all different dog breeds from the teeniest to the largest of them. You can use the small size for cats, too, if they will keep them on. My cats tolerated them for a short time, basically just long enough to snap a couple of cute pics.

Doesn’t my Charles look so handsome? He’s a perfect “little” giraffe!

Zoo Snoods-Unicorn
Kallie the Unicorn

Kallie transformed into a tiny unicorn for a short time, but it didn’t last long. She dragged the snood off within about 30 seconds. LOL

I tried the small unicorn snood on another cat, Cheeto, and he kept it on longer. I think for my cats it would take several times of putting it on before they didn’t act confused about it and try to remove it.

There are SO many animal-themed choices to choose from, and the part I love the most is that $1 of every snood sold is donated to organizations that help animals in need. So not only do you get something super cute for your furry friend, you can spend easy knowing that you are instrumental in helping animals that are abandoned, abused, and in need of loving human advocacy to save and protect them. This company is especially interested in supporting no-kill animal shelters. Gotta love that!

Added Bonus: Zoo Snoods can do double-duty as Halloween costumes for your pet.

Choose one for your pet at Zoo Snoods, NordstromRack, or Amazon.

BasePaws DNA Kit (cats)

Basepaws Cat DNA Test

We’re all familiar with DNA and its applications for law enforcement, medical research, and genealogy. I had no idea until recently that DNA could also be used to learn about your cat’s breed, health, and habits.

Basepaws Cat DNA Test

The Basepaws Cat DNA Kit is very easy to use. When you receive your kit in the mail, it’s practically ready right out of the box to send it back for processing. The box it comes in is the one you use to return it, so no looking around for a small box at home or having to go out and buy one. That’s impressive right off the bat.

You collect your cat’s DNA by rubbing a swab inside their mouth for a few seconds (just like you would with a human). Once collected you open a small vial of stabilizing liquid, insert the swab and close it. Then you shake the tube to mix the sample well.

Return it to the box it came in, remove the liner from the lid, and close to seal the box.

That’s it. The company has even already placed a postage-paid return label on the exterior of the package for you. All you have to do it drop it into the mail and wait for an email with the results.

It will not only help you learn more about your pet, but the results are also used to grow a database of feline information to help research efforts regarding cat care. In addition, as Basepaws’ database of information grows and more research is done, you will receive email updates with important information to help you provide the best care possible for your cats. That’s pretty cool!

I literally just got mine in the mail, so I can’t speak to what I might learn from this service yet. My hardest decision at the moment is which of my 5 cats to use the DNA kit on.

Four of my cats are tabbies. Kallie is all fluffy brown-striped with a pronounced “M†on her forehead. Princess is short-haired, brown-striped and white. Pippa is tri-color (short-hair white, orange, and brown-striped). And Cheeto is mostly orange short-haired, with a small amount of white (he also has a pronounced “M†on his forehead. My fifth cat, Allie, is all black.

So, it was kind of hard to decide which one to submit a DNA profile for and then see what the analysis can tell me about him or her. Ultimately, I chose Cheeto since he seemed the most interested in the kit. Once I get the results, I will likely do another post to share what I learned, so stay tuned for that in the near future!

Petlandia Personalized Pet Books & Other Items (dogs and cats)

Fun Stories Personalized For Your Pet - Petlandia Book

I got a Petlandia personalized book for my daughter for her birthday last year. You can choose what the cat in the story looks like to personalize it for your pet or the pet of someone you’d like to gift it to. Other options include choosing eye color and collar color, too. Then choose a story and get a really nice hardcover story book featuring your pet by name in the story.

I chose a story with the famous Grumpy Cat in it, since my daughter and I find that little kitty hilarious. She loved it!

My daughter’s cat, Gypsy, as featured with Grumpy Cat in a personalized Petlandia story book adventure.

You can also find other personalized items like mugs, blankets, note books and greeting cards, feeding mats, and wrapping paper.

Petlandia is the purr-fect place to find something for the pet (or a pet lover) who has everything else already.

Kitty Box Ramp (cats)

When you get a new kitty, often they are kittens or relatively young. Cats are agile little creatures and can maneuver themselves to get pretty much wherever they want to go. They are often pretty advanced in age before it becomes noticeable that they are no longer as spry as they once were.

As they advance into old age they may move slower and with more care than their younger days required. You may notice that they no longer jump up on counter tops or chairs and they may even begin to have trouble getting in and out of their litter box which can result in accidents on the floor or in other undesirable areas of your home.

I had an older cat who was having these issues. They presented slowly over a long period of time. Kitty Box Ramp really helped him continue to do his business (no pun intended) as he was a very independent little guy. He’s gone over the Rainbow Bridge now, but I’m glad to have this item in mind as I have other cats who will inevitably get to the age that it would help them also.

If you have an ill or elderly cat, head over to Kitty Box Ramp or Amazon to get one for your beloved kitty.

Oxyfresh Pet Deodorizer (dogs and cats)

Oxyfresh Pet Deodorizer

Oxyfresh carries some really great products to help make having cats and dogs a little easier and healthier — for them, for you, and for your home. You’ll find oral care items, health supplements, and grooming products in abundance.

I have two dogs, a Golden Retriever and a Jack Russell/Beagle mix. And boy, can they make my house smelly! Sometimes, they are smelly themselves as they have no respect for my nose when it comes to staying out of dirty situations.

Even when they aren’t noticeably smelly themselves, sometimes I catch a whiff of left behind odors on the furniture and carpet where they like to curl up and snooze. Yuck! I mean, my furniture, carpets and bedding don’t stand a chance without serious deodorizing help with these yahoos around here!

Cheeto asleep on couch.
Couch cushions must be rearranged to make more comfortable sleeping conditions.

Oxyfresh Pet Deodorizer is an easy solution. I simply spray surfaces where they spend time occasionally to get rid of those smells so that we can enjoy our home while not having to shoo them off the comfy beds and couches.

They carry personal care products for people, too. So, definitely check them out at Oxyfresh, Chewy, and Amazon.

Vital Pet Life Wild Salmon Oil and Oatmeal & Organic Aloe Shampoo (dogs, cats & horses)

Vital Pet Life--Wild Salmon Oil and Oatmeal & Organic Aloe Pet Shampoo

Shampooing dogs (and sometimes cats? — if they’ll let ya) can be a challenge. Finding good quality natural products is worth every single second of research to try to find the best option for your pets.

Vital Pet Life Oatmeal & Organic Aloe Shampoo is a natural pet shampoo that contains Aloe, Jojoba, and Oatmeal for moisturization and smoothness of fur. Aloe Vera, Oatmeal, Yucca, Chamomile, and Jojoba help soothe skin with their anti-inflammatory properties. What you won’t find in Vital Pet Life products are Sulfates, Parabens, or Isothiazolinones.

My dogs are a bit ambivalent about bath time. They don’t hate it, but they don’t love it, either. And there’s nothing worse than going to all the trouble of bathing them and having them just smell like wet, stinky dogs after we’re done.  After using this shampoo on them a few times, I have to say that not only does their coat really feel clean, it smells nice, too.

Shedding is a huge problem. My Golden Retriever sheds a lot — I’m always finding little fur-tumbleweeds, as I call them, rolling across the floor as you walk past them and disturb the air with your feet. Brushing him is an all-in kind of endeavor. It’s never just a quick brush and fluff because the gorgeousness of his coat belies all the under-fur that’s hiding his gorgeous wavy fur. Sometimes, brushing him results in enough fur on the floor to make a whole other dog! LOL

Pile of dog hair after grooming.
This is a typical pile of underfur that I am left to clean up after brushing my Golden Retriever, Charles. Seriously, it’s almost enough to make a whole other dog!!!

Our smaller dog, a Jack Russell-Beagle mix, has shorter hair. But, she sheds also, and those short little hairs are all left behind on the couch or other favorite napping spots. Brushing her helps, and at least there’s no dog-sized pile of under-fur to deal with when I’m done.

Pets Love Presents Too--Grandma Lucy's Oven-Baked Dog Treats--Basepaws DNA Catkit--Oxyfresh Pet Deodorizer--Vital Pet Life Salmon Oil and Oatmeal & Aloe Pet Shampoo --- Vital Pet Life--Wild Salmon Oil and Oatmeal & Organic Aloe Pet Shampoo

Vital Pet Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil is a pet supplement that is full of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. You can put it on your dog’s food for important health benefits like nourishing their skin and coat, reduce itching and scratching, can soothe allergies, and help reduce inflammation. It says it can help reduce shedding, too, so I may have to try it and see how well it works soon.

Find these products at Vital Pet Life and Amazon.
