As a parent with a child who has chronic allergies, life can look a little different. Things you didn’t think of before can suddenly become scary and change the day with one accidental exposure. Here are some tips and tricks we have learned over the years that might help you with your allergy journey.
Allergies and more allergies!
My oldest daughter is allergic to, well, the world for lack of a better term. Her allergy journey started when she was just over a year old, when we found out she had a peanut allergy. She has seen an allergist since then. We have had skin tests and blood tests, and as she gets older, her list of allergies seems to continue to grow with her. Her current list runs as follows: peanuts/tree nuts (basically, if it ends with nut she’s allergic); most grasses and trees; dog, cats, mice; milk, eggs, soy. Oddly enough, the only thing she isn’t allergic to is mold.
This means that it takes all hands on deck when it comes to exposure and prevention. Now that she is older, she is very conscious of what she is putting in her body and what she is around. But one thing that started very young was making sure she is very vocal to her friends and other adults that she has these chronic allergies. She carries her EpiPen with her at all time, and has it on her phone as her Emergency screen to help in case of an exposure when not with me.
When we started school, we weren’t sure how this would look for her because she has so many things that could induce a reaction, but the teachers have been great about helping keep the exposure to a minimum. Having a school that is on board with your treatment plan really does make all the difference.
On top of her chronic allergies, she also suffers from really sensitive skin. Her eczema flare-ups leave her raw and bleeding. We have struggled for some time to find the perfect laundry soap. There are so many harsh chemicals in all the leading soaps, and it always ends up with her being itchy and uncomfortable.
