Avoid Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms

Dealing with mental illness can be difficult. You can find yourself having the hardest time of your life. So it’s not all too surprising that some of us go down the wrong path when it comes to coping mechanisms. Avoid seeking out alcohol or other depressants and stimulants that can temporarily change your mood – they won’t have a long-lasting effect and can often cause more damage than good. There are better options out there!

Seek Professional Help

The first step that you need to take when you feel you are experiencing the symptoms of mental illness is to seek professional help. Professional doctors, psychiatrists, and psychologists are nothing to be afraid of. They’re the most informed people in the subject of mental health and they will be able to diagnose your condition, helping you to understand what you are experiencing and guiding you in the right direction to improve how you are feeling and your quality of life in general. Whether you need treatment for anxiety, teen depression treatment, or anything else, they will be able to point you along a path that will greatly alleviate your suffering and day to day difficulties.

Talk to People

There are plenty of people you can confide in about experiences of mental illness. Whether you reach out to your family and friends, your manager or boss, your colleagues, or an anonymous support line – sometimes just talking can be good. A problem shared is a problem halved and you will feel like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. Talk as much as you can!

When we think of exercise, we generally think of good physical health. Exercise won’t necessarily “cure” a mental illness or rid you of the symptoms of mental illness, but it can greatly improve your mental wellbeing.

There are various reasons for this. The average person should aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise every week or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise. Even short bursts of physical activity can improve our alertness, provide us with positive energy, and improve our general mood. Exercise promotes us to leave the house for fresh air.

Consider Your Diet

Like exercise, the majority of us will also associate food with physical health rather than mental health. Of course, a healthy balanced diet is essential to lead a physically healthy lifestyle. You should consume everything in moderation and avoid overindulgence in sugar, salts, and fats in particular. Again, you need to take note that eating healthily isn’t going to be a cure to any mental illness. But it’s important to remember that your diet can have an impact on your mental health. So, it’s definitely something worth taking into consideration and bearing in mind at all times.


Various studies have been carried out in this area. Eating well can lead to a greater sense of wellbeing in general. One study shows us that a Mediterranean diet that contains vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, and grains. This type of diet results in a noticeable reduction in depressive symptoms.

Dietary Advice

Some basic dietary advice for those experience for those experiencing mental illness could include:

  • A reduction of caffeine – caffeine can increase your heart rate, exacerbating the symptoms of conditions like anxiety. It’s always better to opt for decaf alternatives.
  • A reduction of sugar – many have a sweet tooth. There’s no need to deny yourself something that brings you a sense of happiness. But bear in mind that sugar can be associated with experiences of depression and anxiety. There are plenty of sweet alternatives out there. Naturally, sweet fruit is just one example.
  • Stay Hydrated – we should drink around eight glasses of water a day. Try to reach this target.
