End to an Era with Parenthood

I started watching Parenthood when it first premiered six years ago. Parenthood was easy to relate to because of Max. As any Parenthood fan knows, Max has Asperbers Syndrome. Our son has Autism and I think Parenthood was the first show to feature a character with Autism on television.
End of an Era

One morning last weekend, our son woke up, got dressed and went over to his little play station set up at the kitchen table to play with his sand. He received special sand to play with for Christmas. My husband and I realized how much is he is growing up and becoming more independent and less dependent on us. Our son is 8 years old and has Autism and Special Needs. Usually, he likes to be near one of us or take over the television. He likes to follow us from room to room too. He rarely goes into another room to play on his own.

Busy day of shopping
My son loves being out and about and going shopping. There are times when he misbehaves and wants to run around, which is why I put him in the shopping cart. He loves it and it keeps him in one place. It allows me to push him around and he gets to look at everything while I can take my time.
My Day Away from Home
Today is Good Friday. I was off of work today and my son is also off of school. Today is a huge day for my husband as it is his midterm. Since my husband needed to do his midterm online, we decided that my son and I would spend the day at a local hotel. This way, my husband can concentrate on his midterm while my son and I are away from home.
Chuck E. Cheese’s Supports Autism Awareness Month
My son has Autism. When I heard about Chuck E. Cheese supporting Autism Awareness Month with his #BlueTeam by spreading awareness of Autism Kindness Acts (#AKA), I knew I wanted to participate. I was asked to review my local store to enjoy a fun, family day at Chuck E. Cheese! I received a guest pass to go to our local store in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you are a frequent visitor, reader, fan or follower of my blog, you may be aware that my dear son has Autism. Special needs is very near and dear to us. My husband and I live it, every day! I think that people with special needs are the sweetest people you will ever meet. They don’t know hate, only love.
Signing Time On Demand Review

For this review, I chose Series 1 Vol. 3: Signing Time Everyday Signs. I chose this DVD because my son is 6 years old and currently learning signs at school. This review opportunity hits close to home because my son has Autism and special needs. My son is delayed in speech, so using sign language helps us communicate with him and gives him the opportunity to make his needs known.
Costco (Myrtle Beach, SC) Review

My husband, my son, myself and my in-laws went to Costco in Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday, October 29th between 12pm-1pm. I enjoy going on the weekends as there are always a ton of samples to try. Unfortunately, one of the ladies passing out the free food was extremely rude to us/my son. Her table had some type of cheese, so I took a sample for myself and for my son. She gave me a mean look when I took two samples and handed one to my son. I happily ate my sample, however my son took a few bites and ended up spitting them out and some pieces fell on the floor. My mother-in-law apologized to the lady as she reached for a broom and dust pan. The lady’s response was uncalled for and rude, especially for someone who works around customers. Her reply was, “Well, he’s just slowing me down.” She also acted like we were getting on her nerves for taking samples.
As a parent of a son with special needs and autism, we are already hesitant to go out in public because we never know when he will have a meltdown, tantrum, etc. As we were going down each aisle, my son did end up screaming and getting impatient. When this happens, we try to distract him or remove him from the situation.
When I heard the lady’s uncalled for comment, it really made my blood boil and I could only say to her, “Well, I apologize for my son having special needs!” I would have said more to her, but I was with my mother-in-law. I believe this woman needs to adjust her bad attitude, especially since she interacts with your customers! I also think she needs to be educated on special needs, or at least gain an understanding that people/children who misbehave in public may have a disability/handicap/special needs that you cannot see. I regret not catching her name, but I can tell you that she was handing out cheese. Her table was in the back of the store.
Running into a person like this in your store was a huge disappointment. However, when we arrived to checkout, the cashier and the associate helping to unload and load our cart really made my day! They were friendly and smiling!
While my husband and I are not members of Costco, we were shopping with my in-laws. Even my parents are members of Costco. This was our first time at a Costco on the East Coast and I was impressed with how helpful the front end associates were. Too bad the lady handing out free sample cheese couldn’t learn to smile.
