If you are looking for a fun read for the holiday season that won’t be all-consuming and interfere with the caroling, get-togethers, cookie baking, gift shopping or any other holiday related activities… here it is. Get reading.
Spending the Holidays… is a fun read, full of quick wit and hilarious situations from Ms. Mann’s lifetime of holiday experience. We can all find ourselves withing the pages of this book, in one or more of these essays. I particularly connected with Mann’s take on the annual Christmas photo, cookie exchanges, holiday task systems, binge gift wrapping and those letters some of us try to include in our holiday cards to let everyone know what we’ve been up to all year.
No holiday is safe from Ms. Mann’s wit. Also touched on were other major holidays: New Years, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving. Even Mother’s Day isn’t safe from inspection.
I could totally see SNL bringing every one of the essays to life in true comedic fashion. How do I start a movement to pitch a show themed after Spending the Holidays… with Jen Mann as the host? And who would the musical guest be? Adam Sandler of course!!! Ever heard his Lunch Lady song or his famous muscial Hannukah celebration? This would be comedic gold for his musical talent, am I right?
David Sedaris and Tina Fey could (probably) not have written these pages any better, but I’d love to see them try. Wouldn’t you? I smell a Facebook campaign in the making. Anyone game to spearhead that project?
I hate Christmas shopping for my Mom (the in-laws, too, for that matter) because they have everything. I know you all can feel that pain, too. This Christmas my traditional Christmas grab bag for Mom will be centered around this book. Thrown in a pretty new coffee mug, some single-serve coffee and hot chocolate drink packets, her favorite candy (Tootsie Rolls), new school pic bookmarks (she & my step-dad mock fight over these little gems) and a few other little odds and ends…and voila! Holiday gift giving perfection. My siblings gifts just cannot compare this year!
Mom’s had a very hard year and this will be just the thing to take her mind off of all that.
