The Care Bears are back! Or are they? They never really did go away, so maybe I should say that they’re extending their run, I guess. These fun and colorful little bears have been around for as much of my life as I can remember. That’s no small feat in a consumer’s world where everyone is always moving on to the next newest and brightest thing.
The Care Bear universe has branched out to include some new characters, their cousins, who are fun and bring new adventures for old and new fans alike to appreciate. I recently came into possession of a new DVD full of Care Bear & Cousins adventures that my nieces and nephew are really having a great time with. Care Bears & Cousins BFFs Volume 2, from the Netflix Original series Care Bears & Cousins, has become an instant classic at my house.
I remember as a kid waiting impatiently after a long week of school for Saturday morning to roll around. It was almost like Christmas since it was the only time cartoons were on TV. This was in the 80s, really before a VHS player and recorded programming had entered the majority of American homes to any appreciable degree, at least as far as I can remember. So, we anticipated Saturday morning cartoons with much anticipation and excitement!
I don’t even remember if we owned a VHS player honestly. That was back in the day when kids actually spent the majority of their free time reading actual books, listening to music on a turntable or (maybe) a cassette tape deck, or playing outside riding bikes or Big Wheels or roller skates (remember roller skates?), digging tunnels to race our little Hot Wheels cars through, riding horses and playing Tag or Ding Dong Ditch with our friends. Are you lost yet? Google it! We had actual, physical fun that didn’t involve electronics or device screens.
But, Saturday mornings were a different animal altogether. For a few (very few) precious hours we parked our antsy little butts down on the floor in front of the TV and got lost in the world of such entertaining TV shows as Care Bears, Smurfs, Scooby Doo, Fat Albert, and The Wondercats. (Like I said, Google it, all you youngin’s really missed out on some fantastic stuff that happened before you were born.)

Anyhoo, getting back to the present day, I’m really glad to see that some things never change. The Care Bears are still offering important messages to viewers about attitude, hope, helpfulness and friendship. I guess it’s true that some things really don’t ever change. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
