My son and I live in a gated community. I feel very safe in the area we reside in. I love the neighborhood because we have a few shopping centers nearby. So, when I heard about a crime that happened inside our community, I felt our security was rocked!

Our neighborhood is so convenient for our lifestyle. I have grocery stores, banks, coffee shops, restaurants, plenty of shopping, and even a few shipping/mail options all very close to us!
We’ve been here over a year and I feel very safe, especially as a single mom.
Security was rocked
A few days ago, I was notified by the HOA that there was a home invasion robbery! I was a bit shocked and thought about how I need to be more aware. I’ve been lazy. I just need to be cautious with my actions.
A day after I was notified of the robbery, I saw a news van driving around our complex. I was on my way to the bus stop to wait for my son to get home from school. They asked me what I knew and if I wanted to be interviewed. I politely declined and explained why. I did tell them briefly about what I knew, which wasn’t much.
I later found out from fellow neighbors which of our neighbors was robbed. It was a very elderly gentleman. Literally, the most vulnerable person ever. I’ve seen him with his daughter who visits him. I usually see her walking with him in the parking lot (maybe helping him run errands?).
Apparently, the two masked men knocked him over. Meanwhile, one of the men helped the elderly resident up (after he was knocked over). They ended up stealing his TV remote.
Security Company Could Use Improvements
I am actually disappointed with the community security company that they use. They are just “fancy” security personnel in a “fancy” car who drive around our complex, get out from time to time to walk the premises, and rat out the residents for not throwing their trash in the dumpsters. That’s pretty much what they do.
When the security company does their patrols, they don’t even park at the front of the complex to make their presence known. Instead, they park to where it is hidden from the front, so visitors and residents can’t even see! If you’re going to be security, at least park on the front lines. Wouldn’t that make sense?
Another Safety Solution
I thought about suggesting to our HOA that we contact the local police department to have one of their cars parked in our parking lot. If anything, it could help keep un-welcomed visitors away!

I thought of 5 basic safety tips to consider. Please be aware, I am a single mom on a budget. We live on a fixed income, so I don’t have the funds to buy expensive security equipment or services!
5 Tips to stay safe at home:
Lock your doors and close windows when leaving home.
Be aware of your surroundings when you reach your home. Have your keys ready!
Make sure your doors, garage doors, side doors are locked once inside.
Change your routine. Change the times your leave and arrive home.
Try automatic lights to turn on and off inside your home.

Great tips, but so sad that it has come to this. Makes me so scared to think of what life will be like when my babies are adults
I live in a relatively affluent area that is not gated. We have had a variety of breakins including kicking in the front door (breaking it off the frame) while people are home. I think the only way to deter this is a security system with cameras. My city has enough crime and has a lack of resources to have a police office in every neighborhood. People need to protect themselves. $50 a month is a lot of money but I think my life is worth it.
