Have You Tried Superfood Supplements?

The world of supplements always seems to be evolving. This is partly the result of consumers being more open and curious about the possible benefits of vitamins and minerals. Additionally, it’s also driven by how many new options are available to us, including supplements formulated with superfood ingredients.

What is a Superfood?

Superfood is a term we hear a lot, but what exactly does it mean? It refers to those foods that are especially high in nutrients. While superfoods are not a cure-all for everything, they can give your healthy lifestyle a little something extra.

According to the Harvard Health Blog,” superfoods†offer some very important nutrients that can power-pack your meals and snacks, and further enhance a healthy eating pattern.â€

These nutrient-dense foods include things like berries, leafy greens, nuts, legume, and cruciferous vegetables. Some studies show eating superfoods may help reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and even lower cholesterol.  

It’s just another reason to eat more whole foods and less processed junk. Another option for adding superfoods to your diet is via supplements. I recently tried out a few myself from Om Mushroom and Sun Chlorella.

Om Mushroom Supplements

One of the latest trends in supplements is mushrooms, and for good reason. They are rich in antioxidants and can help support immune health, brain function, and improve your energy. Some of the most popular mushrooms used in supplements are reishi, lion’s mane and chaga.

As a kid, I wasn’t the biggest fan of mushrooms, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown to enjoy them more. I’ve also tried a few mushroom based chai latte and hot chocolate blends. They have a rich, earthy flavor that I enjoy. So, when Om Mushroom offered to send me their Beauty-Full supplement, I jumped at the chance to try them.

Beauty-Full is powered by a superfood mushroom blend, consisting of Chaga, King Trumpet, Mitake and Shitake, as well as biotin. It is designed to help your body fight off free radicals, which can damage your cells. Beauty-Full also supports skin, hair and nails, by making them more radiant and stronger.

This vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, kosher supplement is available in powder and capsule form. I was sent the capsule form, which requires you to take 3 pills a day, which I did for 30 days. So how did this superfood perform?

For me at least, with mixed results. I will say that I did notice my skin looked more radiant. However, I didn’t notice any improvement in my hair or nails. Regardless, I really did love the glow from within my skin seems to have, even on no makeup days.

Of the three superfood supplements I tried; the Sun Chlorella was the most unknown to me.  While I have used chlorophyll based skincare, I didn’t realize you could also take it in supplement form.

Sun Chlorella is designed to help our bodies eliminate heavy metals and other toxins, which we are exposed to on a daily basis. Additionally, this chlorophyll based superfood supplement may aid in hormone balance and digestive health, and help reduce inflammatory conditions.

Additionally, Sun Chlorella contains a growth factor that helps with cell turnover, repair and rejuvenation. This superfood also contains Vitamin A, D, B2, B6, and B12. magnesium, iron, niacin, folate, fatty acids,  and phosphorus. In other words, it’s loaded with nutrients our bodies need.

When I first received my Sun Chlorella, I was overwhelmed by the fact that it required me to take 15 pills a day. That’s a lot to swallow. However, you can divide it up over the course of the day and take 5 at each meal. In reality, these pills are so small and easy to take that I had no issue taking them all in one sitting or breaking it up. I’m so glad they aren’t the size of normal “horse pill†supplements.

As for my results, I can’t really say I notice anything, which is not a bad thing. For one, I had no side effects from the pills. Since supplements work on the inside, I think their effects are something you notice over time. In other words, because your body is getting the nutrients you need you don’t get sick as often or feel as tired. Instead, you generally feel an improvement in your overall health.

I can say that I think the Sun Chlorella did help my digestive health thanks to its rich fiber content. I did notice less bloating or tummy issues, which I sometimes have after eating certain foods. This is definitely one of those supplements I’d like to continue taking to see what happens over time.
